Mark Bavis (born March 13, 1970 in Roslindale , Massachusetts , † September 11, 2001 in New York City , New York ) was an American ice hockey player , coach and scout , who during his active time from 1989 to 1996 among others played for the Providence Bruins and Fredericton Canadiens in the American Hockey League . His twin brother Mike was also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Mark Bavis began his career as a hockey player in the team at Boston University , for which he was active from 1989 to 1993 and won the championship of Hockey East in the 1990/91 season . He had previously been selected as a high school player in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft in the ninth round as a total of 181 players by the New York Rangers . However, they did not sign him. Instead, the winger made his professional hockey debut for the Providence Bruins and Fredericton Canadiens of the American Hockey League in the 1993/94 season . In the following two seasons, the left shooter was in the East Coast Hockey League for the South Carolina Stingrays on the ice, where he ended the 1995/96 season at his former club Providence Bruins in the AHL.
Mark Bavis, who ended his professional career at the age of 26, worked from 1997 to 1999 as an assistant coach for Harvard University in ECAC Hockey . In the 1999/2000 season he worked in the same position for the Chicago Freeze from the junior division of the North American Hockey League . From the summer of 2000, the American was employed as a professional scout for the Los Angeles Kings from the National Hockey League . Together with his colleague, the former player and multiple Stanley Cup winner Garnet Bailey , he fell victim to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 , when both wanted to return to Los Angeles on United Airlines Flight 175 .
Bavi's number 12 is no longer awarded by the South Carolina Stingrays.
