Career

McDonough first played four years from 1982 to 1986 at Saint Anselm College in the second division of the Eastern College Athletic Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association , before moving to the professional camp for the 1986/97 season and playing for the Flint Spirits in the International Hockey League .

After the undrafted center had also spent the 1987/88 season in the minor league area, the Los Angeles Kings from the National Hockey League signed him in April 1988 . For the 1989/90 season , the American made the final jump into the Kings squad, but was transferred to the New York Islanders two months into the season . There he played the following three seasons in both the NHL squad and the farm team in the American Hockey League . In the summer of 1992, the Islanders gave McDonough to the San Jose Sharks , where he played his last 30 NHL games. From the 1993/94 season, McDonough played exclusively in the IHL with the San Diego Gulls , Los Angeles Ice Dogs and Orlando Solar Bears .

After the official end of his active career on July 26, 1999, he worked for a year as an assistant coach with the Orlando Solar Bears. In the 2001/02 season he again laced the skates for the Manchester Monarchs from the AHL, for which he played five games.
