John Spencer Hughes (born March 18, 1954 in Charlottetown , Prince Edward Island ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The defender denied 77 appearances for during his 1974 to 1982, continuing professional career, among others, Edmonton Oilers , Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers in the National Hockey League . However, he spent most of his career in the World Hockey Association , where he played over 300 games for five teams.
Career
John Hughes spent his junior years in Ontario , where he was only active for the Markham Waxers before he moved to the Toronto Marlboros in the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) in the 1971/72 season. After his first full season he won the OHA playoffs for the J. Ross Robertson Cup as well as the subsequent Memorial Cup with the team . As a physically robust defender, he also recommended himself for the professional sector, so that he was selected in the NHL Amateur Draft 1974 on 41st by the Vancouver Canucks and in the WHA Secret Amateur Draft 1974 in ninth place by the Houston Eros .
In the choice between the two competing North American professional leagues, Hughes initially opted for the World Hockey Association (WHA), in which he ran for the Phoenix Roadrunners at the beginning of the 1974/75 season. The Roadrunners had hired him on loan from the Cincinnati Stingers , who in turn acquired him in June 1974 together with Dick Spannbauer and sent Don Larway to the Houston Eros for it. In the 1975/76 season, the Stingers franchise also started playing, in whose jersey the defender recorded his career best in the WHA with 37 scorer points from 79 games. In addition, he placed with 204 penalty minutes among the ten most punished players in the league. After two years in Cincinnati, he was transferred to the Houston Eros in May 1977, while in return Craig Norwich and the rights to Dave Taylor moved to the Stingers.
As a result, the end of the WHA, which was to dissolve in 1979, was already looming in Houston, where Hughes was only to spend a year before the Eros ceased playing in 1978. He was transferred for financial consideration to the Indianapolis Racers , which also disbanded six months later, so that he joined the Edmonton Oilers as a free agent in the middle of the 1978/79 season. With the team around Wayne Gretzky , he reached the final for the Avco World Trophy in the 1979 playoffs , but lost to the Winnipeg Jets there before both teams transferred to the National Hockey League (NHL).
Hughes remained in the course of the NHL Expansion Draft 1979 not received the Oilers, but was reclaimed (reclaimed) by the Vancouver Canucks , who still held his NHL rights. So he spent a year in the Pacific Northwest before returning to the Oilers via the Waiver in December 1980 . There he was, however, already mainly used in Edmonton's farm team , the Wichita Wind from the Central Hockey League , before he was exchanged for Ray Markham for the New York Rangers in March 1981 . There, too, he was mostly on the ice with the farm team from the American Hockey League (AHL), the New Haven Nighthawks , before ending his career in the AHL with the Springfield Indians the following year . In total, Hughes had played 77 NHL games and 395 WHA games.
