Alexei Jurjewitsch Jegorow ( Russian Алексей Юрьевич Егоров ; English transcription: Alexei Yurievich Yegorov ; born May 21, 1975 in Leningrad , Russian SFSR ; † March 2, 2002 in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian ice hockey player . During his career, the winger was active for the San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League and the Schwenninger Wild Wings in the German Ice Hockey League .
Career
Jegorow first played for SKA Saint Petersburg from 1992 to 1995 in his hometown of Saint Petersburg . After he was selected in the third round in the third round in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft by the San Jose Sharks , he moved to North America during the 1994/95 season.
There he played for the rest of the year in the Central Hockey League for the Fort Worth Fire . In the 1995/96 season , the Russian was appointed to the NHL squad for the first time. Egorov was the first player in North American ice hockey history to make the direct jump from the CHL to the NHL. In his first game, he scored his first career point by setting up a goal, and just days later he managed a hat trick . Overall, he was able to score five points in nine games. Also in the 1995/96 season he ran twice for the Sharks, but was mostly used for the farm teams at that time , the Kansas City Blades and Kentucky Thoroughblades .
After the 1997/98 season , Yegorov returned to Russia. With Torpedo Yaroslavl and his regular club SKA Saint Petersburg, he ran for two different teams in one season.
For the 1999/00 season , Egorov moved back to North America after he had been selected by the Atlanta Thrashers in the Expansion Draft . This time he played in the lower class United Hockey League for the Adirondack IceHawks and the Long Beach Ice Dogs in the International Hockey League , but did not make the jump back to the NHL. For this reason, the winger moved to the Schwenninger Wild Wings in the German Ice Hockey League for the 2000/01 season .
Yegorov died on March 2, 2002 at the age of 26 in his hometown after a fight with drug dealers to whom he had previously pawned his passport.
