Career

Mikael Tellqvist began his career with the juniors of Djurgårdens IF , where he was able to assert himself as a regular goalkeeper. In 1998/99 he rose to the pros in the Elitserien and took over the position of the back-up goalkeeper behind the former NHL goalkeeper Tommy Söderström . Söderström played as often as he could, which is why Tellqvist only got three appearances.
In the 1999/2000 season he made the breakthrough and was able to push Söderström out of the gate, won the championship of the Elitserien and was awarded as Årets nykomling . In the 2000 NHL Entry Draft he was then selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the third round at position 70. He played another season in Sweden, won the championship again and played with the Swedish national team at the 2001 World Cup , where they won the bronze medal. Then he moved to North America.
The 2001/02 season he played with the St. John's Maple Leafs , the then farm team of Toronto in the American Hockey League . During the 2002/03 season he was allowed to complete his first three missions in the NHL, but stayed mainly in the AHL. After the season he won the silver medal with Sweden at the World Cup . In the 2003/04 season he completed eleven games for Toronto and again spent most of the season with the farm team in the AHL. After the lockout - 2004/05 season , the Swede finally integral part of the NHL squad in Toronto was and took over the role of back-up goalie behind Ed Belfour . In February 2006 Tellqvist took part with the Swedish national team at the Olympic Winter Games in Turin , but only played one game when his team won the gold medal.
On March 10, 2006 Ed Belfour injured and Tellqvist was temporarily the first goalkeeper of the Maple Leafs, but after conceding a total of eleven goals in two games in a row against the Montréal Canadiens , he lost the place to Jean-Sébastien Aubin . At the beginning of the 2006/07 season , Tellqvist was sent to the Toronto Marlies in the AHL, as the Maple Leafs chose Andrew Raycroft and Jean-Sebastien Aubin as a goalkeeper team.
On November 28, 2006 he was transferred from the Maple Leafs to the Phoenix Coyotes , where he developed into a serious competitor for the experienced goalkeeper Curtis Joseph due to two strong games at the beginning , but again did not get beyond the role of the substitute goalkeeper. During the 2007/08 season , Tellqvist and Alex Auld formed the Coyotes goalkeeper team. On March 4, 2009, the day of the trade deadline , he was transferred to the Buffalo Sabers in exchange for a four-round draft pick .
Return to Europe
In May 2009 Tellqvist was signed by Ak Bars Kazan from the Continental Hockey League . After a moderate start to the season, the left catcher was handed over to Lukko Rauma in November 2009 , who in return sent Petri Vehanen to Kazan . In August 2010 Tellqvist was signed by Dinamo Riga , which was not extended after the 2010/11 season , so the Swede returned to his home country in June 2011 and decided to work for MODO Hockey . In the following season he played 51 games in the Elitserien for MODO , before he was on the ice again for Dinamo Riga for two years from May 2012 and won the Nadezhda Cup there in 2013 .
