Michael Johnston "Mike" Condon (born April 27, 1990 in Holliston , Massachusetts ) is an American ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the National Hockey League since July 2019 and on loan for the Charlotte Checkers in the American Hockey League is used.

Career

Youth and University

Mike Condon was born in Holliston, grew up in neighboring Needham and attended Belmont Hill School. In 2009 he enrolled at Princeton University , where he began to study political science, and from then on played for the Princeton Tigers in the ECAC , a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). After Condon had completed only four missions for the Tigers as a freshman , he came to eleven games in the following season, in which he achieved a catch rate of 90.2% and a shutout . In the following two years at Princeton, he increased his personal statistics to a catch rate of 92.3% in the 2012/13 season, but was not selected in any NHL Entry Draft .

In order to gain a foothold in professional ice hockey, Condon joined the Ontario Reign from the ECHL on an amateur tryout contract during the 2013 Spring Break . For the Reign, he only conceded six goals in four games, so shortly afterwards he signed another trial contract with the Houston Eros from the American Hockey League (AHL), which was ranked higher . There, too, the goalkeeper knew how to convince, so that the Canadiens de Montréal from the National Hockey League (NHL) provided him with a two-year entry contract in May 2013 .

NHL

The Canadiens mainly used Condon in the 2013/14 season on their ECHL farm team , the Wheeling Nailers , in which he had six shutouts and a catch rate of 93.1% in 39 games. He was also named ECHL Rookie of the Month for November. In addition, he has already played three games with the Hamilton Bulldogs from the AHL, in which he was regularly used in the following season 2014/15. In February 2015, the Canadiens extended his contract for another two years.

As part of the preparation for the 2015/16 season, Condon ousted Dustin Tokarski from the Canadiens' squad and went into the new NHL season as the new second goalkeeper behind Carey Price . On the eleventh day of the match, however, Price suffered an injury that ultimately - with the exception of a brief return to the ice - left him out until the end of the season, so that Condon was now the Canadiens' first goalkeeper. As a result, the American came to 55 games, most of them a rookie goalkeeper for the Canadiens since the 1971/72 season ( Ken Dryden , 64 games). His accomplishments led him to join Team USA , which finished fourth at the 2016 World Cup . Condon came here, alternating with Keith Kinkaid, on five missions.

Shortly before the start of the season, he was signed by the Pittsburgh Penguins via the waiver in October 2016 . In early November, however, after completing a season game, the Penguins gave him to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a five-round vote in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft . Afterwards, Condon was regularly used by the Senators, but lost his regular place in the 2018/19 season. As a result, he was transferred to the Tampa Bay Lightning in July 2019 in exchange for Ryan Callahan . In addition, Ottawa received a five-round vote in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft and Tampa a six- round vote in the same draft.

The Lightning used him in the AHL at the Syracuse Crunch before they awarded him to the Charlotte Checkers in February 2020 .
