Henry Ross Perot (born June 27, 1930 in Texarkana , Texas - † July 9, 2019 in Dallas , Texas) was an American entrepreneur and politician ( Reform Party ).

Career in business

After working for a number of years as a salesperson at IBM , Perot founded Electronic Data Systems Corporation (EDS) in 1962, which, according to the company, was the world's first IT service company . Perot sold the company to General Motors in 1984 and remained chairman of the board until 1987 . He made $ 3.1 billion from the sale.

Hostage Liberation

While at EDS, Perot organized a group led by former Special Forces Colonel Arthur D. Simons . This was supposed to free two of Perot's employees who had been taken hostage in Iran after the Islamic Revolution in 1979 . The group waited until the prison was stormed by a group of insurgents and then transported the two employees out of the country via Turkey in the confusing situation. Ken Follett processed the story in On the Wings of the Eagle into a "factual thriller from Iran".

Perot ran as a non-party candidate in the 1992 presidential election , in which he received 18.91% of the vote. In Maine (30.44%) and Utah (27.34%) it even came in second, ahead of George Bush and Bill Clinton, respectively . In the popular election, he was the most successful third-party candidate since Theodore Roosevelt . However, he could not get electoral votes, which are decisive in the American presidential election.

In 1995 Perot founded the Reform Party , whose candidate he was in the 1996 presidential election , but in which he only received 8.4%; this was his last application for office.
