history

WeWork was founded in 2010 by Miguel McKelvey and Adam Neumann in New York . In 2011, the company ran for creative accounting under criticism in 2014 reported Forbes , WeWork is the fastest growing rent office space in New York. That same year, the value of the company at 5 billion was US dollar appreciated. In 2017, the company was valued at $ 20 billion. At the beginning of 2019, Wework was valued at $ 47 billion.

Since the beginning of 2019, WeWork has been pursuing the new strategy “The We Company”, which is being supplemented by the divisions “WeLive” (rental of living spaces with a similar concept) and “WeGrow” (educational services). Around 300 employees were laid off in March 2019.

With the submission of the stock exchange prospectus in August 2019 in preparation for the IPO, criticism of the corporate structure grew, which ensured Adam Neumann's great influence. In addition, it was unclear how the company could become profitable because, in addition to sales, losses had also increased. At the end of September 2019, Neumann stepped down from the position of CEO with immediate effect, replacing Artie Minson (previously CFO) and Sebastian Gunningham (previously Vice Chairman) as dual leaders. Neumann remains chairman of the board of directors (chairman). According to media reports, the investor Softbank had exerted pressure to achieve the change at the top of WeWork. At $ 11 billion, Softbank is the largest investor. The IPO scheduled for September 2019 has been postponed. The New York Times reported on the group's considerations to part with 4,000 to 5,000 of its 12,500 employees at the time.

It is possible to permanently rent a desk in an open work area or to acquire access to a contingent of changing staffed desks, whereby the tenant does not always use the same workstation. In addition, private offices, entire office floors and entire locations can be rented. If there are other WeWork tenants at the locations, they share some services, for example in the form of meeting rooms. Certain internal services can be purchased in an online shop in addition to services from third parties.
