Adam Neumann
Adam Neumann (born April 25, 1979 in Tel Aviv ) is an Israeli entrepreneur . Together with Miguel McKelvey, he founded WeWork . From 2010 to 2019 he also served as CEO of WeWork. Forbes estimated his net worth at $ 2.2 billion in September 2019.
Life
Adam Neumann was born to Avivit and Doron Neumann. When he was seven years old, his parents divorced. He and his younger sister Adi then moved to the United States with their mother . Due to a reading and spelling disorder , he did not learn to read and write until the third grade. After four years in the United States, they returned to Israel in 1990 and settled in Kibbutz Nir Am . He successfully graduated from the Israeli Naval Academy and then served for five years as an officer in the Israeli Navy . He was then released in 2001 with the rank of lieutenant . He then attended the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College in New York City .
In 2008, he and his friend Miguel McKelvey founded Green Desk , a shared office space that focused on sustainability. After they sold their shares in Green Desk, they used the money together from the sale with a loan of 15 million US dollars for the establishment of WeWork, a company whose business model is based on office space and shared workspaces for self-employed and To offer companies. Under Neumann's leadership, WeWork grew into one of the most valuable start-ups in the world. In 2019, it had 10,000 employees and an estimated value of $ 47 billion.
In September 2019, Neumann had to resign as CEO of the company after a planned IPO had to be postponed and the estimated value of the company was lowered to junk level by rating agencies. This came under pressure from WeWork's investors, including Japanese billionaire Masayoshi Son . Neumann remained Chairman of WeWork.
In October 2019, the Wall Street Journal announced that Neumann would receive nearly $ 1.7 billion from Stakeholder Softbank in exchange for leaving WeWork's board of directors and severing most of his ties with the company.
As a private investor, Neumann invested in other start-ups, real estate, hotels and cannabis .
Private
Neumann is married to Rebekah Neumann and has five children. His wife Rebekah is a cousin of actress Gwyneth Paltrow and helped him build WeWork. He describes himself as a practicing follower of Judaism . He has appeared in public several times as an extroverted personality.
Controversy
In 2018, WeWork was charged by a former employee who identified incidents of sexual harassment and other inappropriate behavior in the company's workplace. Neumann's own behavior was also criticized by a former employee. He is said to have offered an applicant tequila during a job interview .
According to the Wall Street Journal , Neumann chartered a Gulfstream G650 for a trip from the United States to Israel in the summer of 2018 . During the flight, Neumann and his friends spent much of the flight smoking marijuana . After the plane landed in Israel, the flight crew found a cereal box filled with marijuana and reported it to the jet owner. Fearing a possible drug smuggling charge, the jet's owner ordered him to fly back to the United States immediately.
He is accused of having enriched himself with the WeWork brand name and is said to be responsible for inconsistencies in the company's first annual report published according to stock market criteria. He therefore had to give up his position as managing director.
