Klaus Schönbach

Klaus Schönbach (born September 4, 1949 in Seligenstadt ) is a German communications and media scientist .

biography

After graduating from high school in Seligenstadt, Schönbach studied journalism , sociology and German at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . Also in Mainz , he was in 1975 Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann with a empirical study on separation of news and opinion doctorate . He then became head of the content analysis department at what was then the Center for Surveys, Methods and Analyzes (ZUMA) in Mannheim (now GESIS).

From 1978 Klaus Schönbach worked as an academic advisor at the Institute for Journalism at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . There he completed his habilitation in 1982 with a comparative study on the political effects of the press and television . He also developed the dynamic, transactional model of media impact research together with Werner Früh .

In 1983 Schönbach was appointed to the professorship for applied communication research at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1985 he became professor of journalism at the Institute for Journalism and Communication Research at the Hanover University of Music and Theater, which he co-founded (now the University of Music, Theater and Media). There he played a key role in setting up the journalism and media management (applied media science) courses . From 1990 to 1997 he was director of his institute.

In 1998 Klaus Schönbach switched to the professorship for general communication studies at the University of Amsterdam and from 2005 to 2008 he was also BBDO professor for media studies at the Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen . From 2010 to 2014 he was Professor of General Communication Studies at the University of Vienna and head of the Institute for Media and Communication Studies there. From 2012 to 2014 he was Scientific Director of the first - part-time - Masters in Health Communication in Europe at the University of Vienna. From 2014 to 2016 he worked as Associate Dean for Research and Professor in Residence at Northwestern University in Qatar in Doha / Qatar, then as Senior Associate Dean. Since 2018 he has been Distinguished Associate Professor at Northwestern University in Qatar.

Schönbach is Honorary Professor at Zeppelin University , Friedrichshafen, and Honorary Fellow of the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR), University of Amsterdam . He was also visiting professor at Indiana University , Cleveland State University, San Jose State University, and the University of Texas.
