Ulrich Deppendorf (born January 27, 1950 in Essen ) is a German journalist and television presenter . From May 2007 to April 2015 he was the studio manager and television editor-in - chief at the ARD capital studio .

Life

Ulrich Deppendorf grew up in Essen and Dinslaken . After high school in 1970 in Duisburg , he studied at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster law . The first state examination followed in 1976. This was followed by the legal traineeship at the Duisburg district court , which he broke off after only 6 months without the second state examination. In November 1976 he became a trainee at Westdeutscher Rundfunk and completed the traineeship in 1978. Deppendorf stayed with WDR until 1991. He moderated the show here and today and worked as an editor for Journal 3 , the Tagesschau and the Tagesthemen . At times he was an assistant to the editor-in-chief Theo M. Loch .

In 1980 Deppendorf changed to the editor-in-chief of WDR television as an editor for special tasks. There he took over the management from 1986 to 1989. At the same time he was initially deputy head of the editorial group Zeitgeschehen Aktuell . From December 1989 he was promoted to head of this editorial group. In May 1987, Deppendorf was again active in front of the camera and presented the election events for the first time on ARD . During this time he developed the program ZAK with Gerd Berger .

In 1991 Ulrich Deppendorf left the WDR, went to Hamburg and two years later became the first editor-in-chief of the Tagesschau and Tagesthemen. During his tenure, the content of the ARD news offering was further developed and significantly expanded with the new Tagesschau issues in the morning, noon and afternoon.

In 1999 he moved to the ARD capital studio in Berlin as editor-in-chief , where he headed the founding team. He also took over the moderation for the report from Berlin .

In May 2002 he returned to Cologne as program director for television at WDR . From 2003 to 2007 Ulrich Deppendorf was also the ARD television game coordinator and, in 2006, the overall coordinator of ARD reporting on the football World Cup in Germany. In 2003, Deppendorf was in discussion as the director of the Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB), which was merged from the ORB and SFB , but was unable to prevail against the candidate Dagmar Reim , who was ultimately elected . In May 2007 he returned to Berlin and was again head of the ARD capital studio . His contract as head of the capital's studio was extended until May 31, 2015. After the 298th program "Report from Berlin", Deppendorf went into retirement on April 19, 2015. Tina Hassel was his successor . One year before the contract expired, Deppendorf suffered a minor stroke while on Mallorca, from which he has fully recovered. He was "very lucky".

The capital city studio produced the podcast Deppendorfs Woche on a weekly basis , in which he spoke about political events of the week and gave his personal opinion on them. Deppendorfs Woche was published on tagesschau.de and tagesschau24 .

He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of Journalists Network and the Berlin School of Journalists . On February 25, 2015, Deppendorf received the special prize from the German Bundestag's Politics Media Prize .

Ulrich Deppendorf is chairman of the board of the museum association of the German Historical Museum in Berlin.

Deppendorf is married and has no children.

In the cabaret show Mitternachtsspitzen , Deppendorf was parodied by Wilfried Schmickler as "Uli from Deppendorf".
