At the age of just 22, Bornheim also went to Washington, DC to work for the ZDF foreign studio there.

ARD television correspondent and leukemia disease

In 1994 he switched to BR, for which he worked as a reporter in Berlin from 1999 and as a seconded correspondent in the ARD capital studio from 2004, developing articles for the Tagesschau and Tagesthemen . His main focus was on the specialist areas CDU / CSU , finance , home affairs and economics .

Bornheim made his last appearance as a correspondent for the Tagesschau at the beginning of May 2008. During a medical examination, he had previously been diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia . In the case of extensive blood stem cell donations , more than 10,000 people were also typed for the German bone marrow donor database. No donation was possible within the family. After accessing a website that his sister had set up especially for him, no suitable donor could be found by December 2008. He decided on a form of therapy classified as risky and successfully combated leukemia.
