Helge Fuhst

Helge Fuhst (born March 2, 1984 in Hanover ) is a German journalist , television presenter and media manager . Since October 2019 he has been the second editor-in-chief of ARD-aktuell , the ARD joint editorial team for Tagesschau and Tagesthemen . Before that, from January 2018 to September 2019, he was ARD program director at Phoenix and moderator of the political discussion programs “ Unter den Linden ” and “ Internationaler Frühschoppen ”.

Life

Origin and education

Fuhst grew up in Hanover and Cuxhaven . He graduated from the Amandus-Abendroth-Gymnasium in Cuxhaven. He completed his master’s degree in 2010 at the Leibniz University in Hanover , majoring in political science and history . 2014 Helge Fuhst was at the Chemnitz University of Technology PhD . He wrote his dissertation on the first term of office of US President Obama .

As a student, Fuhst was politically active. From 2004 to 2007 he was chairman of the Junge Union in Cuxhaven and a member of the CDU . In 2006 he ran on the CDU list for the district election in electoral area II of the city of Cuxhaven, but did not achieve a mandate. When he started working as a journalist, he left the party.

Started as a television journalist for ARD and NDR

In 2008 and 2009 Fuhst worked as a producer in the ARD studio in Washington, DC . Before that, he spent six months in the US presidential election campaign at NBC News in Washington.

Fuhst completed his journalistic traineeship at NDR . He had previously worked as a television writer for the NDR regional radio station in Hanover. In 2012 and 2013 Fuhst worked for ARD Tagesthemen in Hamburg , where he worked closely as a moderation editor with the moderator at the time, Tom Buhrow , who is considered his sponsor.

Change to WDR and Phoenix

In 2013 Fuhst moved to WDR in Cologne . There he became the personal advisor to the new artistic director Tom Buhrow , and later also deputy director of the artistic director. From 2016, Helge Fuhst headed the Central Tasks and Program Management department at Phoenix , the event and documentation channel of ARD and ZDF , and, as deputy program manager, also took on responsibility for the entire television station.

From 2016 to 2017 Fuhst moderated the news program "Phoenix der Tag" as well as special programs.

On June 26, 2017, the ARD directors elected Helge Fuhst as the new program manager of Phoenix at the suggestion of Tom Buhrow. He took up his new office on January 1, 2018.

Since October 2017, Fuhst has also moderated the political discussion program “ Unter den Linden ”, Monday evenings at 10:15 pm at Phoenix. He was also the host of the program " Internationaler Frühschoppen ". In May 2019 he also hosted the program "Election 2019 - Current Issues on the European and Bremen Elections " together with co-presenter Damla Hekimoglu .

Second editor-in-chief of ARD-aktuell

In October 2019, Fuhst took over the post of second editor-in - chief at ARD-aktuell as the successor to Marcus Bornheim, who had been promoted to first editor-in - chief . There he is in charge of the topics of the day . He moderated the day's topics for the first time on January 8, 2020 and the night magazine on July 16, 2020 .
