Bernhard Wabnitz (born March 14, 1952 in Elgersburg ) is a German journalist.

Life

After graduating from Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium (Trier) , Wabnitz studied German, Romance languages, political science and philosophy in Berlin, Rome and Munich. The course was followed by a two-year traineeship at the Catholic News Agency (KNA) in Bonn. In 1984 he became editor and managing editor at Bayerischer Rundfunk . In 1993 he switched to ZDF and took over the management of the Bavarian state studio. In 1995 he became second editor-in - chief at ARD-aktuell . From 1999 to 2005 he was first editor-in-chief. On January 1, 2006, he moved to the ARD studio in Rome as studio manager and television correspondent.

According to a newspaper report from November 4, 2008, the Birthler Authority (BStU) classified him as an Inofficial Employee (IM) of the State Security of the GDR (MfS). The foreign espionage department of the GDR secret service led Wabnitz under the code name "Junior", according to which he is said to have been recruited on an "ideological basis" in the "operational area", ie the Federal Republic (Reg.Nr .: XV / 992/82). According to SIRA, the Stasi's electronic incoming mail system, “Junior” reported, for example, on the Catholic Church, the Catholic News Agency (KNA) and the CSU. Authority chief Marianne Birthler said on the occasion of the discovery of the files: "From the fact that we have published this document, you can see that we are sure of our cause."

Wabnitz denied the allegations and applied for appropriate injunctions . The litigation is over. Most recently, on May 14, 2013, the BGH (VI ZR 333/11) rejected a non-admission complaint by Axel Springer AG, thereby confirming the prohibition of inadmissible reporting by the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court (7 U 34/11) of November 8, 2011.

In an expert report for the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation (BR), Jochen Staadt , project manager of the SED State research association at the Free University of Berlin , commented on the case as follows: “... the files found in the Stasi records authority did not prove that Wabnitz knowingly and willingly with the State Security Service. "The BR keeps the report under lock and key. Expert Staadt had already submitted it before the archive research was completed, as a spokesman for the Birthler authority explained:" We consider a final assessment of the Wabnitz case to be premature in any case. Extensive research is currently ongoing in our Berlin headquarters and in branch offices. "

From 2009 to 2014 Wabnitz was the presenter of Weltspiegel in the First . His successor is Natalie Amiri .
