Karl Schmitt (political scientist)

Karl Schmitt (born June 4, 1944 in Säckingen ) is a German political scientist .

Life

From 1963 to 1968 , Schmitt studied political science , sociology , history and Romance studies at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , the University of Toulouse and the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg . He then did research at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan . In 1977 he was at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Freiburg with the dissertation Political Education in the GDR. Objectives, methods and results of political education at the general schools of the GDR for Dr. phil. PhD. In 1985 he completed his habilitation with the thesis Confession and Electoral Behavior in the Federal Republic of Germany and became a private lecturer.

From 1986 to 1992 he was Professor of Political Science at the University of Cologne . In 1992 he switched to the professorship for political science at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . In 2008 he retired.

Schmitt was chairman of the German Society for Political Science from 1999 to 2001 .

He is married and has three children.
