Hans Vorländer (born September 24, 1954 in Wuppertal ) is a German political scientist .

Life

Vorländer studied political science and law (double degree) as well as philosophy and German at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the University of Geneva . In 1980 he received his doctorate from the University of Bonn under the supervision of Karl Dietrich Bracher . Between 1981 and 1984 Vorländer worked as a lecturer at the Theodor Heuss Academy of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in Gummersbach . He was then a John F. Kennedy Memorial Fellow and Research Associate at Harvard University in Cambridge (USA) in 1984/85 and 1986/87 . From 1985 to 1990 he was a member of the Advisory Board of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation. Vorländer is a liaison professor of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom at the Technical University of Dresden . He was temporarily a member of the board of trustees of the Wolf-Erich-Kellner Memorial Foundation .

Between 1987 and 1993 Vorländer taught as a substitute professor at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and the University of Essen . There he completed his habilitation in 1991 with a paper on political thought and political culture in the USA from 1776 to 1920. In 1993, Vorländer accepted a call from the Technical University of Dresden to the "Chair for Political Theory and History of Ideas", which he has held since then. From 1997 to 2008 he was head of the project “Constitution as an institutional order of the political” of the “Collaborative Research Center 537 Institutionality and Historicity”. From 2009 to 2014 he was the spokesman for the Collaborative Research Center 804 , which he initiated, Transcendence and Common Sense , of which he has also been the deputy founder since 2010. At the TU Dresden he has also been director of the “Center for Constitutional Research and Democracy Research (ZVD)”, which he founded. Between 2001 and 2005 Vorländer was chairman of the scientific advisory board of the Federal Agency for Civic Education and from 2003 to 2005 chairman of the German Society for Political Science . Since 2010 he has been co-editor of the Zeitschrift für Politikwissenschaft .

In August 2013 Vorländer was elected as the new President by the Senate and University Council of the University of Erfurt . After lengthy negotiations, however, Vorländer decided in December 2013 to accept an offer from TU Dresden to stay. Vorländer had already turned down a call to the University of Lucerne in 2006 .

From October 2015 to 2017 Hans Vorländer was Managing Director of the Institute for Political Science at the TU Dresden. He already held this office from 1994 to 1995 and from 2002 to 2003.

Vorländer has been director of the Mercator Forum Migration and Democracy (MIDEM) since 2017. Since 2018 he has been a member of the Expert Council of German Foundations for Integration and Migration . In 2019 and 2020, Vorländer will be a member of the Federal Government's expert commission on the framework for integrability .

Visiting professorships led Vorländer to Paris , Dubrovnik , Mexico City , Bologna and Turin .
