Manfred Hättich (born October 12, 1925 in Owingen ; † March 31, 2003 in Tutzing ) was a German political scientist.

After studying economics and political science at the University of Freiburg , Manfred Hättich received his doctorate in 1957. In 1965 he completed his habilitation in Freiburg. Arnold Bergstraesser's student was then Professor of Political Science at the University of Mainz until 1970 . During this time Kurt Faltlhauser did his doctorate with him . From 1970 until his retirement in 1993 he was Professor of Political Science at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and at the same time director of the Academy for Political Education in Tutzing . From 1981 to 1983 he was chairman of the German Association for Political Science .

In the 1960s he developed a typology of “basic models of political orders” as part of the “comparative government theory”, which is based on three pairs of variables:

  • Power structure: monistic vs. pluralistic
  • Will formation: monopolized vs. competing
  • Representation: total vs. partially

Combining these pairs of variables results in six basic models of political order (excluding the non-functioning combination of pluralistic rule with monopolized will-formation ). Hättich further differentiates between open and closed rulership structure, will-formation and representation - depending on how integrative the individual parameters are in a society.

In 1990 Hättich was awarded the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany.
