Jürgen Hesselbach (born November 2, 1949 in Stuttgart ) is a German professor of mechanical engineering and has been President of the TU Braunschweig since 2005 . His second term ended in April 2017.

education

Hesselbach was born in Stuttgart in 1949. After graduating from high school in Heilbronn , he studied mechanical engineering at the University of Stuttgart from 1968 to 1975 . He then worked as a research assistant at the University of Stuttgart until 1981, where he was awarded a Dr.-Ing. received his doctorate .

Professional and academic career

From 1982 to 1989, Hesselbach worked at Robert Bosch GmbH , most recently as head of development for “assembly technology units” in Waiblingen . In 1990 he followed a call to the TU Braunschweig. There he was head of the Institute for Factory Automation and Handling Technology (IFH) until 1998. From 1999 to 2012 he was head of the Institute for Machine Tools and Manufacturing Technology (IWF), which was merged with the IFH. In addition, since 1998 he has been the spokesman for the Collaborative Research Center “Construction and Manufacturing of Active Microsystems” and since 2002 coordinator of the priority program 1156 “ Adaptronics for Machine Tools” of the German Research Foundation .

Hesselbach not only plays a leading role in numerous specialist organizations, he also played an active role in the academic administration of the TU, including as dean , senate member, chairman of the council and vice-president for research, technology transfer and young academics. From 2002 to 2004 he was Vice President of the TU Braunschweig and since 2005 he has been its President. In May 2010 he was re-elected for a further term; this ended on April 30, 2017. His predecessor as President was Fred Jochen Litterst , his successor is Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla .

Awards

Hesselbach is a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering acatech . He has been an honorary doctor of the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca , Romania , since 1999 . In 2001 he and his research team received the Technology Transfer Prize from the Braunschweig Chamber of Commerce and Industry . In 2002 he was appointed professor hc at the University of Aerospace Technology in Beijing and in 2003 he was appointed professor at the Chinese-German college at Tongji University in Shanghai , where he lectures.
