history

On March 13, 1864, the statutes of the newly founded corporation of the merchants in Braunschweig were confirmed by the ducal state ministry. On August 1st, 1864, the constituent meeting of the newly established Chamber of Commerce took place. This was initially only responsible for the city of Braunschweig. This was critically discussed in the politics of the duchy from the 1880s. Instead, on March 19, 1890, the Chamber of Commerce for the Duchy of Braunschweig was formed, which was now responsible for the entire Duchy of Braunschweig . In 1924 the chamber was renamed "Chamber of Commerce for the Free State of Braunschweig".

After the seizure of power by the National Socialists, the chamber 1933 was brought into line and eliminates the self-management of the economy. With the ordinance on land consolidation in the area of the Hermann-Göring-Werke Salzgitter from June 25, 1941, the city and the district of Goslar were incorporated into the state of Braunschweig. Accordingly, the former Goslar Chamber of Commerce was abolished and the Braunschweig chamber district expanded to include its area. In 1942 the chamber was also abolished and incorporated into the Hanover-Braunschweig Gauwirtschaftskammer .

After the Second World War the chamber was rebuilt. In 1963 there was a scandal about alleged embezzlement of treasury funds, which received much attention in the media, in the course of which General Manager Hans Ballhausen submitted his resignation.
