The Landscape House in Braunschweig is a classicist building from the 18th century in the city center on the square “An der Martinikirche”. It was once the parliament building of the Duchy of Braunschweig and from 1918 of the Free State of Braunschweig . The building, which was destroyed in World War II, stood in ruins for a long time in a fallow field until construction work began on the property in the 1980s. The building was only partially rebuilt and incorporated into a new building complex and is now the seat of a court.

history

In 1782, Duke Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand brought the architect Christian Gottlob Langwagen to Braunschweig, who built the landscape house in the late Baroque - early Classicist style in 1794/99 . Political decisions were made here for the duchy for 150 years until 1918 and for the Free State of Braunschweig until it was destroyed in 1944. The Brunswick Estates Parliament met here . The conference room was on the first floor.

During the Second World War, the building was destroyed, the outer walls remained. The destroyed building remained unchanged as a ruin for years. It was not until the 1980s that the entire area between Eiermarkt in the east and Güldenstrasse in the west was to be revitalized. Before construction began, extensive archaeological excavations took place on an area of 16,000 m², which provided results on the history of the medieval city. Then the reconstruction began. Due to the late reconstruction of this urban area, a particularly careful urban planning took place here. Between the new postmodern development, the streets and squares were restored to their original form and the few remaining pre-war buildings were restored. This also included the use of cobblestones and the construction of street lamps based on historical models.

A new building complex was created, in which the landscape house was incorporated. It was only partially and simplified rebuilt. The portico of the facade has only been restored in a simplified manner, the baroque elements are completely missing. The new building at the landscaped house was built from 1990 to 1994 according to a design and under the direction of the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners .

The landscaped house with adjoining new building has been the seat of the Braunschweig Local Court since September 1994 . The district court had previously been based in the building at Am Wendentor 7 since September 1902.
