Johann Richard Stegemann (born on August 16, 1856 in Groß Wanzleben ; died on May 15, 1925 in Bad Harzburg ) was a German economist and Chamber of Commerce secretary.

Life

Richard Stegemann was the son of district judge Franz Stegemann and his wife Philippine Schaefer. After the father died in 1862, the family moved to Brandenburg , where he attended the first classes of the grammar school. He was admitted to the school gate on April 14, 1871 . His family then lived in Naumburg . When his mother died in 1872, his uncle, the Berlin manufacturer Otto Schaefer , became his guardian. In 1876 he passed the Abitur in Schulpforta. From 1879 he studied law and political science at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin . After studying in Paris in 1880 and spending two years in Joinville , Brazil, he worked as a teacher. He then studied at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . For his doctorate, the first ever on Das Kapital von Karl Marx , he turned to Friedrich Engels in the spring of 1885 to obtain biographical details on the person of Marx. His doctoral thesis was on the critique of Marx's “Capital” . The doctorate took place on August 7, 1885. His doctoral supervisor was the economist Gustav von Schönberg .

In 1886, Stegemann was chosen from among at least 49 applicants to succeed Friedrich Fabri by the Presidium of the Lennep Chamber. In October 1890 he was appointed Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce for the Opole administrative region . In 1891 he initiated an association of Chamber of Commerce secretaries, and he was elected chairman. In March 1894, the general assembly of the Braunschweig Chamber of Commerce elected him to succeed Max Vosberg-Rekow . Stegemann held this office until 1924.

In addition to his office as in-house counsel for the Chamber of Commerce, Richard Stegemann was appointed government councilor for trade and commerce in the ducal state ministry in 1897 at the suggestion of Chamber President Max Jüdel and State Minister Adolf Hartwieg . Until 1915 he was a ducal official.

In addition to his work in the Chamber of Commerce and in the State Ministry, he used the opportunity between 1905/06 and 1911 to hold regular courses on the theory and practice of economics at the Technical University of Braunschweig .

In August 1917, Stegemann was appointed head of the Braunschweig Army Order Office for more effective coordination of deliveries by the Army. In June 1920 he was appointed to the Provisional Reich Economic Council.

Richard Stegemann had been married to Helene Platte since 1893. They had a son named Günther and three daughters Irmgard, Edith and Christa. After leaving the service, the Stegemann family moved to Bad Harzburg in 1924, where Richard Stegemann died on May 15, 1925 after a brief illness.
