Adolf Hartwieg (born January 19, 1849 in Gittelde , † January 9, 1914 in Braunschweig ) was a German lawyer , Real Privy Councilor and Minister of the Interior of the Duchy of Braunschweig .

Life

The son of a country doctor grew up in Lutter am Barenberge and attended the Andreanum grammar school in Hildesheim , where he was considered a model student. After studying law and passing the first state examination , Hartwieg first went to the local court in Lutter am Barenberge. He then switched to the public prosecutor's office in Gandersheim . After further short stays at the city court in Wolfenbüttel and with the police in Braunschweig, Hartwieg was elected mayor of Helmstedt at the age of 25 . After successfully reorganizing the administration there, he was appointed ministerial secretary in the government of the Duchy of Braunschweig in 1879. In 1882 Hartwieg was promoted to government councilor. Through his work he gained the trust of the regent of the duchy, Prince Albrecht of Prussia , who appointed him Real Secret Council and Minister of the Interior in 1889. Hartwieg was a member of the second Brunswick Regency Council from 1906 to 1907. Politically, he found himself in conflict with the presiding Braunschweig Minister Albert von Otto , who, like him, was a member of the Regency Council. Hartwieg became his successor in 1911.

Hartwieg made a contribution to regulating the succession to the throne in the Duchy of Braunschweig and tried, albeit in vain, to reform the electoral law in favor of the working class . In terms of economic policy , he laid the foundations for the foundation of the Braunschweig Chamber of Crafts . Hartwieg was a staunch Protestant and was heavily involved in charities , for example with the Evangelical Association and the Marienstift .

He was awarded the title of " Excellence " for his services . Adolf Hartwieg was married to Helene, née Culemann, with whom he had several children, including the officer Wilhelm Hartwieg (see “Literature” below) and the engineer Gottfried Hartwieg . Hartwieg died shortly before his departure from pneumonia that was not fully cured . His grave is in the Magni cemetery .
