Hans Jürgen Matthies

Hans Jürgen Matthies (born November 6, 1921 in Teterow ; † September 10, 2016 in Braunschweig ) was a German mechanical engineer and university rector and president.

Life

Hans Jürgen Matthies was born in 1921 in Teterow, Mecklenburg, as the son of the manufacturer Ernst Matthies. During the Second World War he served as a first lieutenant and battery leader . In 1946 he began studying mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Berlin , which he continued in Stuttgart at the Hohenheim Agricultural University . The focus was on agricultural engineering . Here he learned the basics and functional relationships in agricultural machinery in the lectures given by the agricultural engineering lecturer Walther Fischer-Schlemm . In 1950 he completed his studies as a graduate engineer and became a scientific assistant to Georg Segler at the Institute for Agricultural Machinery at the Technical University of Braunschweig . In addition to teaching and administration, he conducted research studies in the fields of hay ventilation and harvesting technology for green material, which was reflected in his dissertation , which reads The flow resistance when aerating agricultural crops and was submitted in 1954. From 1954 to 1958 he gained practical experience at the agricultural machinery factory Gebrüder Welger in Wolfenbüttel . Initially he took care of constructive development and organizational special tasks. After a short time he became the company's chief designer and authorized representative . He oversaw developments, constructions and test runs of stationary presses, pick-up presses, blowers, pick-up blowers and agricultural vehicles. In this industrial company he was also able to deepen his knowledge of Halmgut process technology.

In October 1958 he accepted the call to the Technical University of Braunschweig and until 1990 succeeded his doctoral supervisor as professor and director of the institute for agricultural machinery. The date he started enabled him to help design and equip the new building for the Institute for Agricultural Machinery, which was inaugurated in 1963. From 1966 to 1968 he was dean at the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. Other, more peripheral, strengths were shown in the management of the internship office and in its involvement as a coordinator for all university matters in study reform and university legislation . In 1974 he became a full member of the Braunschweig Scientific Society . From 1978 to 1979, Matthies was rector and first president of the university, which has been the Technical University of Braunschweig since 1968. He made a contribution to the integration of the pedagogical university and campaigned for the preservation of the designation technical university. Internally, he converted the rector's constitution into a presidential constitution. Finally, thanks to the innovations he added to the university specialization “Agricultural Engineering”, this was renamed “Tractors, earthworks and agricultural machines”.

Matthies was also active in a variety of voluntary activities. From 1983 to 1988 he was chairman of the VDI agricultural engineering group and, together with Friedhelm Meier, was the initiator and first editor of the Agricultural Engineering Yearbook , which has been reporting on the latest developments in agricultural engineering since 1988. He also acted as chairman of the "Research and Teaching" working group of the Max Eyth Society (MEG), prepared reports for the German Research Foundation (DFG), sat on the board and on the main committee of the Board of Trustees for Technology and Construction in Agriculture (KTBL) , was deputy chairman of the board of trustees of the Federal Research Center for Agriculture (FAL). He was also a member of the Research Council for Food, Agriculture and Forestry, of the Agricultural Employers' Association (LAV) and of the German Agricultural Society (DLG).

Main areas of work and merits

In addition to the straw material process technology, which includes pressing and briquetting (the so-called "straw material compaction"), ventilation and drying and the dynamics of tension in stored piles, there were oil-hydraulic drives and controls, the basics of which were our own investigations into the friction behavior, the pulsation and the efficiency of the Aggregates and systems formed his main focus. Both his dissertation on the first topic, including the previous research reports and subsequent publications based on it, and his book Introduction to Oil Hydraulics have become standard works . The pioneering work done at the TU Braunschweig received great international recognition.

Professor Matthies has given the students and his doctoral students , as it is said, “excellent conditions for a successful professional activity”, as evidenced by the responsible positions in industry, research and teaching, which are occupied by his former students and assistants.
