Otto Kienzle (engineer)

Otto Helmut Kienzle (born October 12, 1893 in Baiersbronn , † October 14, 1969 in Prague ) was a German engineer , production planner and university lecturer .

Life

Otto Kienzle attended elementary school in Baiersbronn , then went to the Latin school in nearby Freudenstadt in autumn 1902 and then switched to the “Königliche Realgymnasium” (today “ Dillmann-Gymnasium” ) in Stuttgart , where he passed his Abitur in 1911. In the winter semester of 1912–1913 he began his studies at the Technical University of Stuttgart and became a member of the student association Academic Society Sonderbund . From the winter semester 1914–1915, he continued his studies at the Technical University of Berlin , where he received his doctorate in 1921 with a thesis on fit systems .

After several years of industrial activity, Kienzle founded the engineering office "Koch und Kienzle" in Berlin in 1930 together with the production planner Richard Koch . In 1934, he was appointed to the chair for industrial engineering and machine tools at the Technical University of Berlin as the successor to Georg Schlesinger . In addition to research and teaching, Kienzle was editor of the magazine "Werkstattstechnik" from 1934. In addition, he had chaired the “Fitments” committee of the German Standards Committee (DNA) since 1930 and was also the German delegate of the International Association of Standards ( ISA ). In 1936 he became chairman of the ISA machine tools committee.

During the Second World War , Kienzle worked at the Heereswaffenamt (HWA) in Berlin , where he was responsible for the development and procurement of tools and gauges . In 1947 Otto Kienzle was commissioned to represent the chair for machine tools at the Technical University of Hanover and was appointed to this position in 1949. There he turned to the forming technology of individual workpieces and set up the drop forging and sheet metal working research center . After his retirement in 1961, Kienzle moved to Stuttgart . In the years that followed, he published various specialist works and was active in national and international engineering organizations. He died in 1969 at a conference in Prague.

To commemorate Otto Kienzle, the "University Group Manufacturing Technology", which he co-founded, donated the Otto Kienzle commemorative coin in 1970 .

Otto Kienzle was the son of Ernst Kienzle (1859–1945), head forest master in Baiersbronn , and Bertha Palm (1872–1948), daughter of the pharmacist Gustav Palm in Neuenbürg and Caroline Rau. Since 1919 Otto Kienzle was married to Charlotte, daughter of the authorized signatory Jakob Bernhardt in Schorndorf and Frida Müller. Through his father, Otto Kienzle was related to the German watch manufacturer Jakob Kienzle .
