To be on the safe side, there is a German-language podcast on the German , European and global security situation. The podcast is recorded and produced every three weeks by Ulrike Franke, Carlo Masala , Frank Sauer and Thomas Wiegold .

History and production

Due to the lack of German-language podcasts on security policy and a lack of security policy debate in Germany, Franke, Masala, Sauer and Wiegold decided to produce such a podcast. The first episode was released on July 19, 2018.

The episodes are usually 60 to 90 minutes long and cover two main topics. After a - mostly gloomy - conclusion, the producers refer to other current topics under the catchphrase "safety instructions".

Previous topics included:

Experts are guests on topics for which there is no in-house expertise. There are also special consequences, for example on the Munich Security Conference .

The individual episodes usually reach between 11,000 and 13,000 views on Soundcloud. The highest reach was 18,500 hits for episode 28. There are also other hits via Spotify and iTunes.

Live shows

The first live show of the podcast took place on January 23, 2020 in the Urania in Berlin and was published as episode 22. Further live shows are planned, but have been postponed indefinitely due to the corona pandemic .

Awards

The podcast was nominated in 2020 for the Grimme Online Award in the "Information" category. To be on the safe side, "the content between the situation in Afghanistan, the geopolitical implications of the 5G mobile communications standard and the militarization of space is made understandable and interesting for laypeople too," said the jury.
