Jörg Lau
Jörg Lau (* 1964 in Aachen ) is a German journalist and author .
life and work
Lau grew up with his brother, who was five years his junior, as the son of a baker who had been expelled from West Prussia in Vicht in the North Eifel. His father was Protestant, his mother Catholic. After graduating from the Goethe-Gymnasium Stolberg and doing his community service , he studied German and philosophy at the Ruhr University in Bochum . During his studies he wrote his first journalistic articles for taz , Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the magazine Merkur . About the print of his first text in Merkur - Lau was 25 years old - he later wrote: "I was high on it for days".
From 1993 to 1996 he was an editor for literature and culture at the daily newspaper . Since 1997 he has been working for the weekly newspaper Die Zeit , since 2007 as editor for foreign policy in the capital office of the time in Berlin. His main topics are: migration, integration, Islam in Europe, Islamism and religion. He also writes essays and a blog about politics and religion for a while online . In 2001 his biography about the writer Hans Magnus Enzensberger was published .
Jörg Lau was a fellow of the German Marshall Fund in Washington in 2000 and a visiting scholar at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University in the 2008 fall semester .
He is married to Mariam Lau , who is also a former taz journalist and now works for Die Zeit . The couple has three daughters.
Awards
In 1992 Jörg Lau received the Ernst Robert Curtius Prize for essay writing .
In 2007 he was awarded a recognition prize as part of the media prize of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria for his essay How our children raise us .
