Lajos Méhes

Lajos Méhes (born July 23, 1927 in Budapest ; † June 28, 2002 ibid) was a Hungarian politician of the party of the Hungarian working people MDP (Magyar Dolgozók Pártja) and finally the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party MSZMP (Magyar Szocialista Munkáspárt) , the first among others Secretary of the Communist Youth Association KISZ, Minister of Industry and Secretary General of the National Council of the SZOT (Szakszervezetek Országos Tanácsa) trade unions . Training and party and youth functionary

Méhes, the son of a mechanic, began vocational training in the wagon construction factory Ganz Vagongyár after completing primary school in 1941 and became a journeyman there in September 1944 after completing his apprenticeship. In 1945 he joined the Communist Party KMP (Kommunisták Magyarországi Pártja) and in 1946 worked for some time as secretary of the St. Stephen's Society SZIT (Szent István Társulat) before he became an employee of the management department of the KMP city administration of Budapest in October 1948 . He then acted between February 1970 and April 1978 as general secretary of the union of iron, metal and electricity workers (Vas-, Fém- és Villamosenergia-ipari Dolgozók Szakszervezetének) . During this time he became a member of the Presidium of the National Council of Trade Unions in 1970 and between 1974 and 1978 also President of the International Federation of Metalworkers' Unions in the World Trade Union Confederation .

On April 21, 1978, Méhes became First Secretary of the MSZMP City Council of Budapest and held this position until December 3, 1980. During this time he was also a member of the Presidium of Parliament from July 1978 to December 1980.

On the XII. Party Congress on March 27, 1980 he was elected a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the MSZMP and belonged to this top management body of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party until the XIII. Party Congress on May 28, 1985.

Subsequently, on December 5, 1980, he was appointed Minister of Industry (Ipari Miniszter) in the government of Prime Minister György Lázár and was a member of this until December 9, 1983. At the same time he was a member of the government's economic commission.

On December 9, 1983, he succeeded Sándor Gáspár in the role of General Secretary of the National Council of the SZOT (Szakszervezetek Országos Tanácsa) trade unions and held this position until March 4, 1985.
