Béla Biszku

Béla Biszku (born September 13, 1921 in Márok ; † March 31, 2016 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian politician of the Hungarian Communist Party MKP (Magyar Kommunista Párt) , the Party of the Hungarian Working People MDP (Magyar Dolgozók Pártja) and later the Hungarian Socialist Workers' party MSZMP (Magyar Szocialista Munkáspárt) , who was Minister of the Interior and Vice-Prime Minister for a few years as well as secretary of the Central Committee of the MSZMP for many years .

Life

Biszku, who came from a poor farming family, completed a professional training as a locksmith and toolmaker after attending four years of school . Between 1937 and 1941 he worked as a mechanic in the Wertheim elevator and refrigerator factory and then for a year as a toolmaker at the instrument factory Marx & Mérei before he became a worker at Philips (Magyar Philips) in 1942 . In 1943 he became a member of the metal workers' union and in 1944 a member of the Hungarian Communist Party MKP (Magyar Kommunista Párt) . After the occupation of Hungary by Germany as part of the Margarethe company during World War II , he took part in the armed resistance in the Budapest working-class district of Angyalföld and was most recently the commander of a police station in the 13th district of Budapest .

After the end of the war, Biszku became an employee of the organization department of the Budapest Party Committee and then in 1946 deputy head of the local cadre department before he became head of the cadre department of the MKP Budapest in 1949. In 1951 he became secretary of the MKP in the 10th district of Kőbánya in Budapest and then graduated from 1953 to 1955 at the party college. After completing his studies, he was first secretary in 1955 and then from March 8, 1956 to November 8, 1957, first secretary of the Budapest Party Committee.

On February 28, 1957, Biszku was appointed to succeed Ferenc Münnich as Minister of the Interior in the government of Prime Minister János Kádár . As Minister of the Interior he was entrusted with the “punishment” of those who tried to shake off the communist dictatorship in the 1956 popular uprising . He was also Minister of the Interior in the subsequent government of Prime Minister Ferenc Münnich, until his replacement by János Pap on September 13, 1961. After that, he was Vice-Chairman of the Council of Ministers until November 27, 1962.

On November 16, 1958, he was elected for the first time as a candidate on the joint list of the Hungarian Independent Popular Front MFN (Magyar Függetlenségi Népfront) and the Patriotic Popular Front HNF (Hazafias Népfront) as a member of the Hungarian Parliament (Országgyűlés) and represented it until 19 April 1985 Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county .

After leaving the government, Biszku became secretary of the Central Committee for Administration and Organization on November 24, 1962 and held this party function until April 24, 1978. Most recently, from 1980 to 1989, he was chairman of the revision committee of the National Council of the SZOT (Szakszervezetek Országos Tanácsa ) .
