Pál Iványi

Pál Iványi (born August 25, 1942 in Budapest ) is a former Hungarian politician of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party MSZMP (Magyar Szocialista Munkáspárt) , who was the de facto mayor of Budapest from 1987 to 1988 as chairman of the city council and then from 1988 to 1989 the Central Committee -Secretary for Economics. On May 22, 1988, he was elected a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the MSZMP and was a member of this top management body of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party until June 24, 1989.

Life

Iványi, son of a shop assistant was after school from 1961 to 1962 as an engineer with the truck manufacturer Csepel Autógyár active and then began studying mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Budapest (BME), which he in 1967 with a degree in mechanical engineering in the field of vehicle construction completed. After completing his studies, he returned to Csepel Autógyár as a research engineer , where he was promoted to deputy director until 1976.

During this time he joined the MSZMP in 1969 and served as party secretary for the Malév airline (Magyar Légiközlekedési Vállalat) between 1976 and 1980 , before becoming head of the economic department of the MSZMP city council of Budapest in February 1980. From January 1985 to December 1986 he was deputy head of the Central Committee for Economics. Since 1980 he was also secretary of the working group for economics in the Central Committee.

On December 17, 1986 Iványi was elected chairman of the Budapest City Council and thus de facto as the successor to Zoltán Szépvölgyi as mayor of Budapest. His term of office lasted from January 1, 1987 to December 20, 1988 and was then replaced by József Bielek . During his term of office, an open day was held on September 17, 1988 in the name of friendship between Vienna and Budapest and the efforts of the two cities to organize a joint world exhibition. He and Vienna's Mayor Helmut Zilk gave a joint press conference.

In addition, he was elected on June 23, 1987 as a member of the Central Committee (ZK) of the MSZMP. On May 22, 1988 he was elected a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the MSZMP and belonged to this top management body of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party until June 24, 1989. In addition, he acted from December 15, 1988 to October 7, 1989 as the Central Committee Secretary for Economic Policy and was also chairman of the Economic and Social Committee of the MSZMP.

In the elections for the four-member party presidency of the MSZMP - the successor body of the Politburo - on June 24, 1989, he was defeated by the competitors Károly Grósz (General Secretary of the party), Prime Minister Miklós Németh and the two ministers of state Rezső Nyers and Imre Pozsgay , but remained without Central Committee secretary Seat in the party presidium.
