József Bielek

József Bielek (born February 6, 1934 in Budapest ; † November 2008 ) was a Hungarian politician of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party MSZMP (Magyar Szocialista Munkáspárt) , who was mayor of Budapest from February 1989 to October 1990 .

Life

After attending school, Bielek studied law at the Eötvös-Loránd University (ELTE), which he graduated in 1956. He then became a member of the Fejér County Council , where he was most recently head of the secretariat. In 1963 he moved to the legal department of the Budapest City Council, where he later served as head of the secretariat of the Chairman of the City Council. In addition, he completed a degree in economics at the Marxism-Leninism Evening University (Marxizmus-Leninizmus Esti Egyetem) and graduated in 1965. In 1977 he became secretary of the Executive Committee of the Budapest City Council and in 1988 Vice-Chairman of the City Council.

In February 1989 Bielek finally succeeded Pál Iványi as chairman of the Budapest City Council and was thus de facto mayor of Budapest until October 1990 . In February 1989 he and the First Secretary of the MSZMP City Council of Budapest, Mihály Jassó, commemorated the 44th anniversary of the liberation of Budapest during World War II .
