István Szabó (politician)

István Szabó (born October 30, 1924 in Nádudvar , small area Püspökladány , Hajdú-Bihar county ; † June 18, 2017 ) was a Hungarian politician of the party of the Hungarian working people MDP (Magyar Dolgozók Pártja) and finally the Hungarian Socialist Workers Party MSZMP (Magyar Szocialista Munkáspárt) . On the XIII. Party Congress on March 28, 1985, he was elected a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the MSZMP and was a member of this top management body of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party until April 12, 1989.

Life

Szabó, who came from a family of small farmers, left elementary school at the age of eight and worked as a farmhand between 1937 and 1945 and later as a farm worker in a technical center for agriculture until 1951. In 1951 he was one of the founding members of the agricultural production cooperative Vörös Csillag Tsz in Nádudvar and served as its chairman between 1952 and 1990. At the same time he joined the party of the Hungarian working people MDP (Magyar Dolgozók Pártja) in 1951 and became a member of the resulting Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party MSZMP (Magyar Szocialista Munkáspárt) after the popular uprising .

As a candidate for the MSZMP, he was elected Member of Parliament (Országgyűlés) for the first time on November 16, 1958 and was a member of this until May 16, 1990. At first he belonged to this for the reserve list of the Patriotic Popular Front (Hazafias Népfront) , then since March 19, 1967 as representative of the 12th constituency of Hajdú-Bihar County , since April 25, 1971 for the 18th constituency of Hajdú-Bihar County as well as since June 8, 1985 as a representative of the 14th constituency of this county, before he was last reelected on the reserve list of the Patriotic Popular Front on June 8, 1985.

On November 24, 1962 he was first a candidate at the VIII Party Congress and then at the IX. Party Congress on December 3, 1966 elected a member of the Central Committee (ZK) of the MSZMP, of which he was a member until October 1989. He also served as President of the National Council of Production Cooperatives from 1967 to 1989. In 1973 he also became President of the Maize and Plant Production Association (Hajdúsági Agráripari Egyesülés) and held this position until 1988.

On the XIII. Party Congress on March 28, 1985, he was elected a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the MSZMP and belonged to this top management body of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party until April 12, 1989. During this time, between July 1987 and 1989, he was President of the Working Group of the Cooperatives of the MSZMP, of which he has been a member since 1970.
