The Idanha dam ( Portuguese Barragem da Idanha or Barragem Marechal Óscar Carmona ) is located in the Central Portugal region in the Castelo Branco district . It dams the river Pônsul , a right (northern) tributary of the Tejo to a reservoir (port. Albufeira da Barragem da Idanha ). The eponymous small town of Idanha-a-Nova is about two kilometers southwest of the dam.

The project to build the dam began in 1935. The construction was completed in 1947. In addition to irrigation, the dam is also used to generate electricity. It is owned by the Associação de Regantes e Beneficiários de Idanha-a-Nova .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 51 m above the foundation level (44 m above the river bed). The top of the wall is at a height of 258.5 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 143 m and its width 5.2 m. The volume of the structure is 66,000 m³.

The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 8 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 700 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 700 m³ / s.

Reservoir

With a normal storage target of 255.5 m (maximum 258.5 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 6.78 km² and holds 78.1 million m³ of water - of which 77.3 million m³ can be used . The minimum congestion target is 228 m.

power plant

With an installed capacity of 2.5  MW , the Idanha power plant is one of the smallest hydropower plants in Portugal. The average annual production is 4.5 million kWh .

The Kaplan turbine was supplied by Voith . It is located in a machine house at the foot of the dam. The power plant's turbine has a maximum output of 2.5 MW and the associated generator 2.75  MVA . The rated speed of the turbine is 750 rpm. The nominal voltage of the generator is 6  kV . In the switchgear , the generator voltage of 6 kV is increased to 30 kV by means of a power transformer.

The minimum height of fall is 9.74 m, the maximum 38.25 m. The minimum flow rate is 4.0 m³ / s, the maximum 7.4 m³ / s.
