National Council constituency of Glarus
The National Council constituency of Glarus is an electoral district for elections to the Swiss National Council . It covers the entire canton of Glarus and has existed since 1848.
Electoral process
Until 1869, the national councils were elected to the Landsgemeinde . Subsequently, until 1917 the majority suffrage was used. In the sense of the Romansh majority election , a candidate needed an absolute majority of the votes in order to be elected. Several ballots may have been necessary to distribute all the seats; each voter had as many votes as there were seats to be allocated. Proportional suffrage has been used since 1919 , in which the seats are allocated to the lists available for selection in proportion to all votes cast.
Name and number of seats
During the Majorz era, in official use, consecutive numbering was used throughout Switzerland, arranged according to the order of the cantons in the Swiss Federal Constitution . The constituency of Glarus was number 18 from 1851, number 19 from 1872 and number 20 from 1911; the numbering has not been used since 1919.
Due to the population development, the number of seats available to the constituency of Glarus varied:
- 1848 to 1851: 1 seat
- 1851 to 1971: 2 seats
- since 1971: 1 seat
