Rudolf Gallati

Rudolf Gallati (born April 16, 1845 in Glarus ; † November 3, 1904 in Ouchy ) was a Swiss lawyer and politician .

biography

Rudolf Gallati, son of the shoemaker and later lawyer Rudolf Gallati, studied law at the universities of Zurich , Heidelberg and Leipzig . In Zurich he joined the Corps Helvetia .

In 1866 he settled in Glarus as a lawyer . In 1871 he became a public prosecutor. In 1904 he became a judge at the Swiss Federal Court in Lausanne . In the Swiss Army , he started an officer career. In 1884 he was promoted to colonel . As a Colonel Brigadier , he was in command of the Gotthard southern front. In 1884 he was a co-founder of the Glarner Kantonalbank , of which he was president until 1886. In 1902 he founded the Horgen-Glarus furniture factory.

From 1872 to 1886 Rudolf Gallati was a member of the triple district administrator of the Canton of Glarus , from 1887 to 1904 of the Glarus district administrator . From 1875 to 1881 and 1899 to 1904 he was mayor of Glarus. After the parliamentary elections in 1887 he was a member of the Swiss National Council until 1904 , and in 1896 he was its president . From 1888 to 1891 central president of the SAC section Tödi.

At the beginning of his political career, Rudolf Gallati belonged to the democratic opposition. Later he was liberal. From 1893 he was assigned to the radical democratic camp at the federal level. From 1898 to 1904 he was a member of the central executive committee of the Free Democratic Party of Switzerland.

As a national councilor, he applied for the creation of a fund for a federal accident and health insurance. With regard to the relationship between state and church, he took a radical view. On social issues he took a liberal-conservative position. He was an advocate of centralization, especially in the military.

Rudolf Gallati was married to Martha Zweifel, a daughter of the Glarner Landammann and Councilor of States Esajas Zweifel. He died after an accident.
