National Council constituency of Schaffhausen
The National Council constituency of Schaffhausen is a constituency for elections to the Swiss National Council . It covers the entire canton of Schaffhausen and has existed since 1848.
Electoral process
Major elections were used until 1917 . In the sense of the Romansh majority election , a candidate needed an absolute majority of the votes in order to be elected. Several ballots may have been necessary to distribute all the seats; each voter had as many votes as there were seats to be allocated. Proportional suffrage has been used since 1919 , in which the seats are allocated to the lists available for selection in proportion to all votes cast.
Name and number of seats
During the Majorz era, in official use, consecutive numbering was used throughout Switzerland, arranged according to the order of the cantons in the Swiss Federal Constitution . The constituency of Schaffhausen was number 25 from 1851, number 26 from 1872 and number 27 from 1881; the numbering has not been used since 1919.
Due to the population development, the number of seats available to the constituency of Schaffhausen varied:
- 1848 to 1922: 2 seats
- 1922 to 1931: 3 seats
- since 1931: 2 seats
