Paul Schmid-Ammann

Paul Schmid-Ammann (born February 2, 1900 in Zurich ; † September 6, 1984 in Erlenbach , Canton of Zurich ) was a Swiss journalist and politician .

Live and act

In his youth Schmid-Ammann attended high school in Zurich . He then completed several agricultural internships from 1917 to 1923, followed by studying agronomy at the ETH Zurich , which he completed in 1926 with a diploma as an engineer-agronomist.

From 1928 to 1939 Schmid-Ammann was the farmers ' secretary in Schaffhausen , secretary of the farmers' party and editor of the daily newspaper Der Schaffhauser Bauer . From 1933 to 1939 he held his first public political office as a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Schaffhausen . At this time he helped found the cantonal farmers' aid fund. In 1935 he was a non-attached National Councilor of the Canton of Schaffhausen for three sessions .

In 1933 Schmid-Ammann founded the weekly newspaper Die Nation with others . Together with representatives of the trade union federation and the Social Democratic Party , he fought against frontism . From 1940 to 1949 he was the foreign editor of the Neue Bündner Zeitung . From 1942 to 1944 he was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Graubünden .

Politically, Schmid-Ammann switched to the SP in 1949. Professionally, he found a new position as editor of the newspaper Volksrecht , as its editor-in-chief from 1950 to 1964. From 1951 to 1969 he took on a new political office as the Zurich Education Council. In this capacity he was a member of the university commission of the University of Zurich , whose theological faculty awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1970 . In 1979 he also received the Gottfried Keller Prize . Schmid-Ammann performed one last political act when he left the SP in 1980.

The publications that Schmid-Ammann has presented in the course of his life include a historical text on the general strike of 1918. Furthermore, various works on agricultural and cultural issues as well as domestic and foreign policy. In 1978 he published his memoirs on the way from political to social democracy .
