Hans-Jürg Fehr (born August 7, 1948 in Rheinklingen , Canton Thurgau ) is a Swiss politician ( SP ).

Activities as parliamentarians

When Fehr was elected to the National Council in the 1999 elections , he could already look back on a long political career. From 1983 to 1984 Fehr was a member of the city parliament of Schaffhausen , also in 1983 he was elected to the Grand Council (today Cantonal Council) of the Canton of Schaffhausen . In 2009 he resigned as a cantonal councilor. Fehr was a member of the national council's commission for economy and taxes and the foreign affairs commission. On May 24, 2013, Fehr announced his resignation from the National Council at the end of the 2014 summer session. He wanted to strengthen the Schaffhausen SP seat in the National Council for the next elections in 2014. Her successor was SP Cantonal Councilor and President of the Cantonal Party Martina Munz in September 2013 .

Fehr as a party politician

Fehr joined the SP in 1977. Four years later he took over the presidium of the SP section of the city of Schaffhausen for two years. In 1985 he became a board member of the SP. One year after his election to the National Council, in October 2000, he was elected Vice-President of the SP by the delegates of the SP Switzerland. On March 6, 2004 he was elected President of SP Switzerland to succeed Christiane Brunner . Within a short time, Fehr managed to calm down the last remaining internal party conflicts from the Ursula Koch era , and to make the party appear united again in public. The party's internal success, however, was in stark contrast to the falling electorate of his party.

On October 26, 2007, Fehr announced his resignation in March 2008. He thus drew the consequences of the severe defeat of the SP in the Swiss parliamentary elections in 2007 . On March 1, 2008, Christian Levrat was elected as his successor at an extraordinary party conference in Basel .

Political profile

In the 46th legislative period (1999-2003) Fehr was practically on the line of his party. He clearly positioned himself for opening up Switzerland to foreign policy, for expanding social welfare, for social liberalization and for protecting the environment. Fehr positions himself in favor of economic liberalization, but is more critical than the middle position of his group. Fehr is clearly opposed to a restrictive foreign policy and tax cuts.

Hans-Jürg Fehr is a historian and has worked as a secondary school teacher, editor and publishing director. He is married and lives in Schaffhausen. Fehr presides over the Swiss workers' relief organization SAH and the board of directors of az Verlags AG, which publishes the Schaffhauser AZ .
