Christian Levrat (born July 7, 1970 in La Tour-de-Trême ) is a Swiss politician . He is a lawyer , trade unionist , Council of States and since 2008 President of the Social Democratic Party of Switzerland (SP).

education

Levrat graduated from the University of Freiburg with a bilingual licentiate in law . He then studied political science at the University of Leicester and graduated with a master's degree . He also holds a diploma from the Association Management Institute at the University of Freiburg.

Profession and Politics

Levrat began his political career with the Young Liberals and later switched to the Social Democratic Party . From 1998 to 2000 he was head of the legal service of the Swiss Refugee Aid . In 2001 he moved to the Communication Union , initially as central secretary and from 2003 as president. He was also Vice President of the Swiss Confederation of Trade Unions .

From 2000 to 2004 Levrat was a member of the Constitutional Council of the Canton of Friborg, which he headed as President in 2003. He had been a member of the National Council since the 2003 elections until he was elected to the Council of States in the first ballot on March 11, 2012 as the successor to Alain Berset, who was elected to the Federal Council . In the elections in 2015 and 2019 he was confirmed.

He was elected party president on March 1, 2008 by the extraordinary party congress of the SP without a dissenting vote. He was the only candidate for office.

Levrat is married with three children and lives in Vuadens .
