Alexander Reichel (politician)

Alexander Reichel (born July 23, 1853 in Paris , † February 22, 1921 in Lausanne ) was a Swiss lawyer , university professor and politician .

Life

Alexander Reichel was a son of the Prussian conductor and composer Adolf Reichel, who immigrated to Bern from Saxony in 1867 . He studied law at the University of Bern from 1874 to 1876 and became an advocate in 1877 . From 1886 to 1890 he was a representative of the radicals on the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern . In 1888 he was a co-founder of the Swiss Social Democratic Party , which he also chaired until 1890. From 1891 to 1899 he was a full professor of law at the University of Bern, then until 1905 head of department in the Justice and Police Department . In 1905 the University of Bern awarded him an honorary doctorate . In the same year he was elected as the first SP member to be a federal judge .

Reichel was naturalized in Oberburg in 1869 . He was married to Anna Coaz, daughter of the forest engineer and mountain topographer Johann Wilhelm Coaz .
