Jakob Hefti (politician)

Jakob Hefti (born December 5, 1873 in Luchsingen , Canton Glarus ; † January 10, 1951 in Glarus ) was a Swiss politician and popular writer .

The son of David Hefti and his wife Katharina grew up in simple circumstances. After primary school he became a factory heater in Hätzingen and Schaffhausen and a member of the Grütliverein . From 1919 to 1921 he worked part-time as an editor for the "Echo vom Rheinfall", a Schaffhausen people's newspaper that appeared from 1905 to 1923. His political articles met with fierce opposition from the Schaffhausen SP (Social Democratic Party) and their “Arbeiterzeitung”, which was founded after the general strike in 1893.

When the farmers, trade and citizens' party (from which the Swiss People's Party later emerged) surprisingly won two seats in the Schaffhausen National Council in 1919 and - since it had only put up one candidate - gave one seat to the “Grütlians”, Hefti became National Council . Fiercely hostile to the losers on the left (SP) and right (FDP) - who refused to accept this decision - he left the canton of Schaffhausen in 1921 and became tax secretary in Glarus.

There he enforced the proportional representation for district elections and worked as a folk writer.
