Christian Meier (born June 3, 1889 in Netstal ; † December 3, 1959 in Glarus , reformed , resident in Schleitheim ) was a Swiss politician (SP) .

biography

Christian Meier was born on June 3, 1889 in Netstal as the son of the founder Christian Meier Senior and Maria-born Leuzinger. Meier initially worked as a carpenter in various major cities in Germany from 1911 . In addition, he autodidactically acquired knowledge about economic and socio-political issues. In 1918 he was appointed as the first workers secretary in the canton of Glarus . In the same year he acted as a co-founder and until 1959 as president of the cantonal union cartel.

In 1921 he married Maria, the daughter of Johann Hemmi. Christian Meier died on December 3, 1959, half a year after he had turned 70 in Glarus.

politics

At the community level, Meier was a member of the Netstal community council from 1926 to 1959 . At cantonal level, he was represented in the Glarus District Administrator between 1920 and 1959 . In addition, he was the first SP politician in Glarus to sit on the National Council from 1943 to 1959 . There he worked, among other things, as a member of the AHV commission. He also presided over the SP of the Canton of Glarus between 1918 and 1959. He was also a member of the central board of the SPS from 1919 to 1959.

Christian Meier was a staunch opponent of anarchism and advocate of democratic principles. He was committed to the expansion of unemployment insurance and collective labor contracts in trade and industry.
