Rudolf Benz
Rudolf Benz (born December 22, 1810 in Zurich ; † June 14, 1872 there ) was a Swiss lawyer and civil servant.
biography
Rudolf Benz was a son of the wage clerk, wine tavern and shopkeeper Josef Benz. His father died in 1813, so that the son had to provide for a living from an early age. He trained himself further, attended the political institute in Zurich and lectured at the law faculty of the University of Zurich .
Benz gained professional experience as a council procurator and then substitute for the public prosecutor. In 1847/48 he was chief judge, from 1848 to 1869 he was responsible for the police as a Zurich government councilor . In addition, he was a councilor from 1863 to 1869. At the same time he was a colonel in the general staff.
Rudolf Benz was a Liberal National Councilor from 1848 to 1869 . In a national council debate in 1848 he got so badly at one another with Colonel Giacomo Luvini from the canton of Ticino that they then fought out the argument in a duel with sabers . Benz was slightly injured in the hand.
Benz was the author of the criminal code for the canton of Zurich and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich . He had been married to Maria Margarethe Rahm, a daughter of the wine merchant Johann Jakob Rahm, since 1859.
