There he met Jakob Robert Steiger , who later became the leader of the second free group . On his return he entered his father's business and soon took on public duties in the community. From 1841 to 1847 he was a district administrator. In the military he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel and led a rifle company in the Sonderbund War .

In 1844 Isler, one of the leading liberals in the Catholic-conservative Freiamt , was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of Aargau. From 1848 to 1851 he was also a member of the National Council and from 1849 to 1851 also a member of the Aargau Constitutional Council. In 1856, out of consideration for the company and the family, he refused to be elected to the cantonal government. His son, Peter Emil Isler , who was born in 1851, also represented the canton of Aargau in the National Council and Council of States.
