Joseph Marzell Hoffmann

Joseph Marzell Hoffmann (born October 20, 1809 in Rorschach ; † August 13, 1888 there ) was a Swiss politician and judge . From 1848 to 1866 he was a member of the National Council, from 1851 to 1859 and from 1863 to 1870 he was a member of the government of the Canton of St. Gallen .

biography

The son of a wealthy Rorschach canvas dealer studied law at the universities of Innsbruck , Freiburg im Breisgau , Heidelberg and Munich . Back in Switzerland, he first worked as a lawyer in Bern . From 1834 to 1837 he worked as secretary of the Justice Department of the Canton of St. Gallen, then as a member of the Catholic Administrative Council . Hoffmann turned against the Roman Catholic Church's claim to power and was a supporter of the Josephine state church . From 1843 to 1849 and in 1851 he was a judge at the St. Gallen Court of Cassation.

Hoffmann's political career began in 1843 when he was elected to the St. Gallen Grand Council , of which he was a member until 1870. In 1848 he was an envoy to the Federal Diet . In October of the same year he ran successfully in the National Council elections and was elected in the constituency of St. Gallen-Nordost . In the years 1851 to 1859 and 1863 to 1870 he was a member of the government of the Canton of St. Gallen. On the side of the radical liberals , he was involved in the school and church political disputes and campaigned above all for the end of church tutelage in the school system. He resigned from the National Council in 1866.
