Josef Leonhard Bernold

Josef Leonhard Bernold (born December 14, 1809 in Walenstadt ; † February 19, 1872 in Bern ) was a Swiss politician , industrialist and judge . From 1848 to 1857 and from 1860 until his death he was a member of the National Council.

biography

Bernold came from an influential family of civil servants, his father Josef Franz Leonhard Bernold was the mayor of Walenstadt and governor and governor of the Sarganserland . The son attended the Catholic grammar school in St. Gallen , after which he studied law and mathematics at the University of Munich . Bernold was the owner of the Nidberg castle estate above Mels . Together with his brother-in-law Fridolin Huber, he was the founder and owner of the Walenstadt colored weaving mill. He was also a partner in the Walenstadt cement brick factory and lime kiln.

In addition to his economic activity, Bernold was a district judge in Sargans and a cantonal judge . He was also district administrator in Mels and from 1847 a colonel . Politically, he represented radical liberal views. In 1837 he was elected to the Grand Council of the Canton of St. Gallen , to which he belonged with interruptions until 1872. In October 1848, Bernold ran for the first National Council elections and was elected in the constituency of St. Gallen-Süd . In 1857 he failed to be re-elected, after which he began to approach the moderate liberals. In the elections in 1860 he succeeded in re-entering the National Council, and in 1872 he died during a National Council session.
