biography

Johann Georg Rauch was born as the son of Ursula Peter and the red tanner Hans Georg Rauch in Diessenhofen in Thurgau . Nothing is known about his school education and professional training. He embarked on a military career as a young adult. As early as 1812 he was a captain in the Thurgau "militia contingent". In 1813 he defended the northern Swiss border under Niklaus Rudolf von Wattenwyl and in 1814 took part in the defense of Fort de Joux in Pontarlier , France under Niklaus Franz von Bachmann . In the same year he moved to the Swiss regiment "Ziegler" in the royal Dutch service. In 1817 he became a battalion adjutant.

On May 18, 1818, he left the regiment and traveled back to Frauenfeld, Switzerland, and became the provisional secretary. In 1820 he married Anna Catharina Vogler, daughter of the President of the Court of Appeal Melchior Vogler. In 1822 he was promoted to registrar at the State Chancellery. In 1829 he married the pastor's daughter Anna Katharina Wirz for the second time. On June 9, 1830, he was appointed district administrator to succeed his father and so he gave up the position of registrar and moved back to Diessenhofen. In 1830 Johann Georg Rauch was elected to the Thurgau Grand Council , where he remained until his death in 1851.

In 1831 he bought a playing card factory from Johann Bernhard Zündel , who had also served in the Swiss "Ziegler" regiment in the Netherlands. He took over the entire workforce and relocated the workshop from Schaffhausen to his house on Rheinstrasse in Diessenhofen. To do this, he had to have his house extensively rebuilt, and the value of the property rose by 30 percent.

In his playing card workshop , the first version of the Swiss Tarot 1JJ was developed from the Tarot de Besançon , which is still used today for the Swiss tarot games Troccas and Troggu . It was the first tarot game that the card workshop produced. In 1838 he sold the Johannes Müller company, who had already completed his apprenticeship there.

In 1831 he became a justice of the peace of the Diessenhofen district and a criminal judge. From 1832 to 1837 he was a councilor of war. He remained a criminal judge until 1841 and justice of the peace until 1842. From 1842 until his death he was governor of the Diessenhofen district .

In 1848 he was elected to the National Council in the first parliamentary elections in the newly founded state . He put his political focus on the interests of the trade and the artisan class. In 1849 he became a member of the Constitutional Commission in the Cantonal Council.

Johann Georg Rauch worked in Pfyn as tax commissioner for the Steckborn district from 1850 . On March 6, 1851, he died of a heart attack in Pfyn.
