biography

He was born in New Orleans, where his father, Giovanni Antonio Demarchi from Astano, worked as an architect. In 1816 he returned with the family to the canton of Ticino . Agostino Demarchi received his secondary education from the Somas people in Lugano and Genoa . He began to study at the University of Pavia , where he was excluded by Giuseppe Mazzini due to his sympathy for the Young Europe movement . He then completed his medical studies at the University of Montpellier and then worked as a doctor in Ticino . Demarchi promoted popular education; he founded the high school in Curio and the kindergarten in his home town of Astano.

On the side of the radical liberals , Demarchi was elected to the Ticino Grand Council in 1839 , and in December of the same year he was involved in the armed radical uprising. In 1846 he moved from the Grand Council to the Council of State , to which he belonged until 1861 and again from 1868 to 1876; during this time he was head of the military department. In 1843 he was the Ticino envoy to the Diet . In October 1850 Demarchi ran successfully in a by-election and then moved to the National Council. From 1851 he represented the constituency of Tessin-Süd , in 1854 he failed to be re-elected. From 1866 to 1868 he represented the canton of Ticino in the Council of States.
