Pietro Peri

Pietro Peri (born March 19, 1794 in Lugano ; † July 7, 1869 ibid) was a Swiss journalist , politician , Ticino Grand Councilor and State Councilor of the Free Democratic Party (FDP).

Life

Pietro Peri was born in Lugano as the son of the chancellor and district judge. He studied law at the University of Pavia , after which he returned to Lugano, where he worked as a lawyer and notary. He was a co-founder of the Vanelli printing company; from 1823 he was editor of the Corriere svizzero and from 1830 to 1834 of the Osservatore del Ceresio . As a politician, he was one of the main opponents of the regime of Landammann Giovanni Battista Quadri and one of the most important representatives of the liberal reform movement of 1830.

As appellate judge (from 1830) he led the trials against the moderate government overthrown by the radical revolution of 1839 and against the conservative lawyer Giuseppe Nessi , who was one of the instigators of a counter-revolutionary uprising in 1841. From 1839 to 1855 Peri was city councilor of Lugano, 1853–1855 deputy city president of Lugano, 1855 and 1862–1869 Ticino Grand Councilor , 1855–1860 State Councilor (headed the education department) and 1861–1869 rector of the Lugano high school

He also wrote poems ( poetry edite ed inedite 1871) and published the Storia della Svizzera italiana dal 1797 al 1802 in 1864 , using materials prepared by Stefano Franscini .
