Alberto Stefani (born August 3, 1918 in Giornico ; † August 3, 2006 ibid) was a Swiss politician of the Christian Democratic People's Party (CVP).

Life

The son of Enrico and Ida Pedretti enrolled in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at ETH Zurich after attending the Papio College in Ascona . After passing his first exams, with the general mobilization of World War II, he was called up to active military service. When he said goodbye, the electrical engineering semester had already begun, so he decided to enroll in the law faculty of the University of Freiburg to study law. After getting excited about the subject, he decided to continue down this path by successfully completing a law degree and later returning to the Canton of Ticino to acquire the lawyer and notary's patent. He owned a law firm in Faido and practiced his profession until his death.

He was married to Livia Anna Pasteris (born 1928) and had two children.

politics

In 1961 Stefani took over the chairmanship of the then Ticino Conservative Democratic Party, which was renamed Partito Popolare Democratico (PPD) in 1971. In 1981 he resigned to be made honorary president the following year. He was mayor of Giornico from 1949 to 1956 and at the same time a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Ticino. From 1956 to 1962 he served as a Councilor of State , first as head of the Department of Public Education and Home Affairs and then, from 1959, of the Department of Public Economy created that year. He was also from 1963 to 1983 Council of States for the CVP.

Stefani has chaired various boards of directors, including the Faido District Hospital, the Santa Croce Retirement Home and the Azienda Elettrica Ticinese (AET).
