Antonio Battaglini
Antonio Battaglini (born October 8, 1845 in Lugano , † November 14, 1923 in Massagno ) was a Swiss lawyer , journalist , politician , Ticino State Councilor and Council of States of the Free Democratic Party (FDP).
Life
Antonio Battaglini was born to Carlo Battaglini of Cagiallo and Rosalia Bussolini. He studied law at the University of Heidelberg and received his doctorate in 1867. Afterwards he returned to Lugano and worked as a lawyer and notary. He was a member of the Ticino Grand Council in the ranks of the Liberals from 1888 to 1893 and from 1895 to 1901, succeeding his father. He was a member of the provisional government that was installed after the liberal revolution of 1890 (Ticino putsch), and was a member of the Constitutional Council (1891-1892). His commitment to the introduction of the majority system was unsuccessful.
From 1893 to 1907 he was a Councilor of States and from 1901 to 1905 a Councilor of State. He decided to resign in 1905 because of differences with the progressive wing of his party. From 1912 to 1916 he was mayor of Massagno. He was a co-founder of the daily newspaper Il Dovere and from 1910 to 1920 board member of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). During his military service he was a major in the military justice department of the Swiss Army .
